Playa required for relationships in Matrix?

Do I need to have Playa in order to have relationship fields in Matrix or can I just use the built-in EE relationship fields?

Unfortunately EE's native relationship system doesn't work with Matrix, and it would be up to EllisLab to add Matrix support to it. So yes, Playa is required, which does fully support Matrix.
