Where can I find documentation on the proper data format for programmatically inserting or updating Playa field data?

In what context?
Playa doesn't provide its own API, so if you want to manually create a relationship outside of the context of creating/editing an entire entry, you'd have to just go in and add/update a row in exp_playa_relationships.
If you're creating a new relationship, you'll also need to make sure you go into exp_channel_data and add *something* to the appropriate field_id_XX cell for the entry, so that EE knows that data exists for that field. Could just be the number "1" – doesn't matter.Comment -
