It was true a year ago :)
Playa 2, released in April '09, does work in SAEFs, thanks to FieldFrame.

What's the story with using Playa and Matrix in a SAEF in EE 2? My first attempts have not been successful.

They don't work in SAEFs in EE2 yet. (Only reason they work in EE1 is because FieldFrame gave them SAEF support for free.)

Is SAEF support in the plans for future releases? Or is this a fieldtype API question?
A personal opinion, but it might be nice to put in a line about SAEF usage (or it's current state) in the documentation for Playa and Matrix and Wygwam. I'd think it's probably natural expectation for ee developers to try to use all their field types in an SAEF. It's helpful to know of such limitations in the design phase. -

One way or another, eventually they will work, yes. Ideally it would be something that EE2's fieldtype API assists with, and I'm going to talk to Derek Jones about it at EECI.

I can't find any documentation that shows how to set this up... syntax and all.
Any links/hints? -

I am using Playa4.1.0.2 with EE2. Is it possible to use Playa in SAEF in this revision?

-
Yes, using SafeCracker’s {field:playa_field_name} tag.
